Event Format

What is the structure of the GRG?
The Garden Route Giro is a six-day gravel stage race. Each day features a point-to-point stage finishing in a different host town, covering diverse and scenic terrain across the Garden Route and Klein Karoo.
Is the GRG a timed race?
Yes. The Garden Route Giro is a competitive event with official timing and live tracking.
Are there different race categories?
Yes. Riders will compete in solo categories based on gender and age groups. Various special categories will be revealed soon.

Race Information

What does the entry fee include?

All entries include a race bag/container to transport your luggage, daily post-race lunch, invitation to the finishers’ function dinner and one night formal accommodation at the Wilderness Hotel (after the final stage). Fully marked routes, timing and tracking, water points, medical and general mechanical support, official event merchandise, and access to all Race Hubs. Meals, accommodation and extras beyond this are included according to the entry package or optional extra you book.

Are meals provided during the event?

Yes. Breakfast will be offered depending on your chosen accommodation package. Your entry fee includes a post-race lunch each day. In addition, food trucks will be available at the finish line hub in every town for extra meals and snacks. You can also purchase a dinner package for the duration of the event if you’d prefer a more inclusive catering option.

Is there a luggage transfer service?
Yes. We transport your bags each day between host towns, so your gear is waiting for you at each stage finish.
What medical services are available?
Qualified medics and response vehicles will be stationed on course and at race villages daily to handle any medical issues or emergencies.

Equipment

What type of bike is suitable for the GRG?
The GRG is designed specifically for gravel bikes. These bikes offer the best balance of speed and control across the varied terrain you’ll encounter during the event.

 

Are aero bars permitted?
No. For rider safety, aero bars are not allowed during the GRG.
Is technical support available during the race?

Yes. Neutral mechanical support is available at designated service points on route and in each race village.

Are mountain bikes and e-bikes allowed?
No. The GRG is a traditional gravel race and does not accommodate mountain bikes or e-bikes.

Region

What kind of terrain can I expect?
The route includes smooth gravel roads, rugged climbs, mountain passes, and coastal flats — offering a mix of fast-rolling and technical segments.

 

What is the weather like in April?
April brings cool mornings and mild days (20–26°C). It’s generally dry, but weather in the mountains and coastal areas can vary. Pack layers and a light rain jacket.

 

Are there opportunities to explore local attractions?
Yes. Each host town offers cultural, culinary, and scenic experiences. From port tasting in Calitzdorp to beach sunsets in Wilderness, there’s something for every kind of explorer.
